A dashboard that requires a user manual is a failed dashboard. Business Intelligence is not about displaying as much data as possible; it is about distilling millions of data points into a clear narrative that compels an executive to take immediate action.

1. Define the KPI Hierarchy
Every dashboard must have a single North Star metric. For a SaaS company, it might be MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue). For logistics, it might be OTIF (On-Time In-Full delivery rate). Below this North Star, we establish supporting metrics, and below those, diagnostic metrics. If a metric does not directly ladder up to the North Star, it does not belong on the executive summary page.
2. Contextualize the Data
A number without context is meaningless. Displaying "14,000 active users" provides no insight. We strictly enforce contextual visualization: "14,000 active users (+12% YoY, -2% against Q3 target)." Dashboards must immediately answer the question: "Is this good or bad?" through the use of target lines, historical benchmarking, and intuitive color coding.
3. The 5-Second Rule
A user should be able to ascertain the health of their department within 5 seconds of opening a dashboard. We utilize the "Z-pattern" of human reading, placing high-level aggregate KPIs at the top left, and drilling down into detailed granular tables at the bottom right.
